Shared Hosting
by Zachary Zerries
Shared web hosting is simply defined as
multiple customers sharing a single web
server. Shared hosting is in contrast to
dedicated hosting, a service in which the
customer leases an entire web server from
a web presence provider, including the
hardware and the operating system.
Dedicated web sharing typically allows
users to receive connectivity to the
Internet, redundancy measures, and
monitoring.
Shared Hosting finds common ground in
many smaller online businesses and content
sites. A dedicated servers' bread and
butter are larger, professional web sites
with loads of traffic, secure e-commerce
applications, sensitive content,
non-shared web or Internet software
applications hosting, or value-added
resellers (VARs), among other things.
Developers within these dedicated servers
will provide shared hosting services to
their customers.
Is Shared Hosting or Dedicated
Hosting for You?
Choosing between shared or dedicated
hosting will ultimately boil down to the
type of business you run. If you need a
service that provides a high-speed
Internet-connected server on an outsourced
basis for individuals, organizations and
small-to-medium-to-large sized businesses,
then dedicated hosting is for you. On the
other hand, if you run a small to medium
sized business, with few employees and
organizations within the company
infrastructure, then shared hosting might
be in your best interest.
Shared hosting services are generally
more affordable than dedicated hosting
services. Dedicated service hardware,
operating systems, connectivity,
redundancy, and monitoring costs are
normally higher, and spread out over the
duration of the contract. Unlike shared
hosting services, however, dedicated web
hosting will ultimately give the customer
total use of the server. |
